I’m an insurance agent, not a retailer. Our agency doesn’t even handle credit cards much less American Express. So why is Morrow Insurance – McDowell a “Neighborhood Champion”? I’ve always held to the mantra, “If it is to be it is up to me.” I personally love the #ShopSmall marketing campaign because it supports everything I believe in. I see shopping local as good economic sense – saving gas, investing in the community, keeping my shopping dollars closer to home. However I also feel that #ShopSmall is important because of the sense of pride in ownership I see in the small businesses in my community, for the future of entrepreneurship, for what individuals can do to innovate and create unique products.

My clients are all small business owners. Not all are retail but for those that have some retail aspect, the holiday selling season is crucial. So their success is ultimately my success.

In McDowell County, NC Morrow Insurance was joined by McDowell Chamber of Commerce and Marion Business Association in promoting #ShopSmallSaturday this year. So far we’ve cooperatively distributed the American Express sponsored marketing kits to 21 locally owned retailers who will be open on that Saturday. Many shops are now planning to use to use those reusable shopping bags, dog kerchief, pens, buttons, and “Welcome to the #ShopSmall Neighborhood” doormat to promote themselves. Every day on Facebook for Morrow McDowell I’m highlighting these #ShopSmall businesses and linking back to their websites or Facebook pages. On that Saturday I’ll be delivering helium balloons with the #ShopSmall logo.

I’m just an insurance agent but this year I’ll know I’ve helped invest in the future of McDowell County, NC by helping support the #ShopSmall effort here.
